The people of Eshira have one purpose: to serve their goddess. As a half-Eshiran bastard, Elias has never been certain if his purpose extends to him. His older half-brother, Marc, on the other hand, serves Gaya with all he has, even going so far as to join her Holy Grove once he becomes a lifecaller, someone blessed with Gaya’s power to control all green and growing things. 
When Elias manifests as a Windcaller, he has worse problems than simply having the powers of an enemy god. Callers are blessed with enormous power at a terrible price. Without a protective rune a caller will be twisted by the element they control, wilding until they are something less than human.

Unfortunately for Elias, there are no windcalling runes in Eshira. He escapes in search of a rune with his mysterious Santabran uncle. Marc helps them escape, and in doing so commits a crime the Grove cannot forgive. Heis  cut-off from the Grove and sent to fight in Eshira’s war.
